Looking for excellence in spelling English
This year’s National Spelling Bee competition, sponsored by MCB, saw an enthusiastic participation of students from Grades 7 to 10. 540 students from 144 secondary schools in Mauritius took part in the English language competition, which occurred for the 17<sup>th</sup> consecutive year.
The finals were held on 5th June 2018. This year’s Spelling Bee winners are:
Grade 7: Mohammad Shayaan Bassa from Ebene SSS
Grade 8: Andrew Ip Min Wan from Royal College of Port Louis
Grade 9: Kyan Meetoo from Collège du Saint Esprit
Grade 10: Mae Mcginley Smith from Westcoast International Secondary School
The winners have won cash prizes of Rs.2,000, Rs.3,000, Rs.4,000 and Rs.5,000, respectively.
The Spelling Bee competition was founded in the United States and tests participants’ mastery of English which is the second most wildly spoken language in the world. It is also the official language in some 50 countries, including Mauritius.

The competition will continue in Rodrigues
National Spelling Bee Competition will continue in Rodrigues with the finals held on Wednesday 20th June 2018, at Le Chou College. 56 students of Grades 7 to 10 from seven secondary institutions will participate in the competition.
